latest in training
After completing my inaugural week of Lagree paired with running, let me tell you - I'm feeling the effects. The soreness was real, but amidst it, I sensed a newfound strength emerging within me.
Places to eat, things to do, and where to run in Detroit to have the best Detroit Marathon weekend ever!
Going into the race, I wasn’t too confident in my training, or lack thereof. I had been running somewhat consistently since February, but my miles hadn’t been high.
There are few things more frustrating than putting in months of training and hard work, only to have a bad race day. Whether it’s because of bad weather, an injury flare up, or just an off day, a bad race can ruin your whole day. It can leave you feeling disappointed, discouraged, and a gross feeling that is hard to shake.
As a former collegiate runner, I developed many unhealthy habits and toxic views that I am still trying to unlearn, five years later. I used to believe that being skinny was the key to running fast, and that consuming too many carbs would make me gain weight.
As a runner, injuries can be a frustrating setback, and I've had my fair share. In just three years, I suffered from four injuries, including a hip injury that took me out of commission for a few months. However, with the Detroit Free Press Marathon on the horizon, I decided to give it another shot.
When it looked like fall races were going to happen this year, I decided to sign up for last month’s Detroit Marathon. After severe shin splints in March and a nagging hip pain in July, I had to drop down to the half, and my training wasn’t where I wanted it to be.

Two weeks ago, my friend and I moved back in together, but this time living in the big city. Detroit. Motown. The D. Motor City. A year ago I was dreaming about living downtown and here I am, all moved in to a gorgeous downtown apartment.
Being injured this time really changed my perspective about running. I don’t know if it’s the 18+ months of no racing or two injuries over the past year, but I really don’t feel the same way that I used to about running. At least for the time being, running has now become something that I like to do because it makes me feel good.

Hey there, I’m Jackie! I’ve been running for over 20 years, spending five years running in college. After graduating, I immediately began training for my first marathon. After crossing the finish line, I was hooked on the longer distance.
Over the past five years, I’ve struggled through injury after injury and the feeling of not wanting to run. But every time I try to take a break, I’m drawn back to the pavement, and this time, I’m back for good.
